Commitment, Fundamentals, and Rehearsing...

Yes I know, three posts in one day might be getting a little bit excessive, but deal with it, this is my show and I have the final say around here!

Getting back into the drum corps mode after a week off, has actually not been all that difficult. I have done some work mentally to make sure that I have my musical show down cold. It is hard to do visual reps right now, but between now and Saturday I will at least familiarize myself with the material again so that I don’t feel like I am rusty when I step out on the field again.

After speaking with Pete this morning I am hoping that rehearsals will take on the different focus and direction that he discussed. What he discussed will help us do what we do best. Out technique and out clean the rest of the competition. I like his ideas, and I welcome them. These are not necessarily new ideas to the Brigadiers, but some of the old tricks that we used back in the past when we were completely dominant in the circuit. I would like to think of it as going back to your basics or your roots.

In fact going through the process of refreshing our fundamentals right now will help us make great strides so long as we can apply those fundamentals to the rehearsal field and then to the show that night. In the past even during our most dominant run we did not always apply these fundamentals to practice, but we were talented enough to get away with it and these things would come though in the shows. We have so many new people right now that I think dedicating ourselves to these fundamentals will make it easier for us to perform our written material. I am crossing my fingers and looking forward to doing the work.

The second aspect of this revamped approach to rehearsal is the cleaning phase on the field. For some this is a learning phase, for some this is a relearning phase, for some this is a familiarity phase and for others it is a cleaning phase. There are very few people ready for the cleaning phase, however with the reps and the review the people that are behind will catch up a whole lot faster. Once we all become comfortable or familiar with the product then we can really dissect the little things that this group always does so well. I look for that to be a progression of familiarity over the next 3 weeks.

In the next 3 weeks we can get all of our new folks in the drill, we can familiarize ourselves with the program, and we can all get comfortable in time for some serious cleaning in time for our “stretch run” through the end of July and into August where we will be seeing some serious competition. This is going to be a very difficult task because we have to gain momentum. We have three weeks to do that, and I am willing to bet that if we do things properly over the next 3 weeks that we can really take this program to the next level come August. I have seen this group make absolutely phenomenal progress in 3 weeks before. There is absolutely no reason why we can’t do it again.

All it takes is commitment. Commitment to yourself, commitment to the people around you, commitment to the show, commitment to practice, commitment to performance, commitment to excellence. It’s time to put aside everything you know about being the best. It’s time to put aside egos. It’s time to put aside experience. It’s time to put aside age. It’s time to forget about all of those factors outside of your control and take control of those things you can. The only thing you can control is you. Your commitment, your attitude, your knowledge of the show, your drill, and your music.

This is the last post today I promise! That doesn’t mean I won’t post 3 times tomorrow though! Now quit reading and go do something productive!
