Would Someone Remind Me....

When playing while jazz running became cool in DCA?

Yikes!!!!

It is hard enough to get all of us weekend warriors to sound good while marching with a normal step size then to try something that most people in great shape and in junior corps doing it everyday have a difficult time mastering. Now granted I have been doing this a long time, and this is a technique that I have mastered, however I am only called on to do it only when absolutely necessary to achieve a desired effect (this is predetermined before the move is written, who is in what place, who has the ability and so on.) Most people get stuck having to jazz run out of necessity and lack of thought as it relates to design. This in turn makes something very difficult look in fact very difficult. When programmed into the show correctly and performed by the chosen few individuals that can achieve at the highest level consistenly it often goes unnoticed...

But isn't that our job as performers? To make the impossible look easy. To defy laws of form and function and flawlessly perform the most difficult of maneuvers. You know like jazz running at a slide all the way out to the 20 in a form that spreads from 20-20 while playing in time with the rest of the ensemble (and make it seem easy!) Yes it goes unnoticed, but as a performer I know what I achieved. I don't have to justify it and say "look at how far I moved, or look at how difficult I made this look, look at how my feet got out of tempo because the step size and the move was too difficult, can you believe that I actually made it all the way out there, look at me bounce beause of the stepsize, I barely made that set, i could hardly breathe and play here...nope none of that. I went out did my job performed to the best of my ability while making it just another seamless and flawless barely noticeable transition in the show.

Why?

BECAUSE I CAN!!!!

OK so it was only slightly (very)self promoting, but it gets my point accross. But I still don't know when, where or why this sort of thing became popular.

Hey it's one man's opinion, and mine (like other things) usually stinks!
